Kathleen Matthews Running for Congress
According to Politico, Kathleen Matthews plans to run to represent our area in the House of Representatives. Many may not recognize her name, but her husband, Chris Matthews, is known by most in the country as the host of MSNBC’s Hardball and the syndicated Chris Matthews Show.
Senator Barbara Mikulski’s announced retirement continues to shake things up politically in Maryland and even in Glade Valley’s Congressional District, Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District. Since redistricting, Glade Valley and much of Frederick County shares lies in Maryland’s Eighth Congressional District which also includes parts of Montgomery County.
Congressman Chris Van Hollen currently represents the Eighth Congressional District. Yesterday, Van Hollen announced he will run for the U.S. Senate to fill Senator Mikulski’s seat.
Kathleen Matthews is more than just Chris Matthews’ better looking half. Mrs. Matthews currently serves as executive vice-president and chief global communications and public affairs officer for Marriott International. Matthews anchored WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., for twenty-five years. Prior to serving as anchor, she worked for fifteen years as production assistant, writer, and reporter for the station.
Matthews has lived in Chevy Chase with her husband, Chris. They married in 1980 and raised three now-grown children, Thomas, Michael, and Caroline. She is a graduate of Stanford University and was a Fellow at John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics at Harvard University. Matthews serves on various boards of non-profits including Catholic Charities, the Black Student Fund, and Ford’s Theatre.
