George Clooney had been thought of as one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors for a long time, but to the chagrin of women everywhere, he is now a married man.

George Clooney, age 53, and the British human rights attorney Amal Alamuddin, age 36, had been mostly protective of their relationship since they became engaged in the spring, but Clooney recently exposed the fact that they would be tying the knot in Venice.

He was at a black-tie charity event in Tuscany, Italy and receiving a humanitarian award at the star-studded gala. According to People magazine, during his acceptance speech he said, “I met my lovely bride-to-be here in Italy, whom I will be marrying in a couple of weeks, in Venice, of all places.”

Their private ceremony held on Saturday was indeed in Venice, Italy and it was a grand, extremely expensive affair. It included a celebration at the Aman Canal Grande Venice resort, in the 16th-century Palazzo Papadopoli. Clooney traveled by motorboat to the ceremony, waving to those offering their congratulations.

The celebrity guests that attended included actor Matt Damon, supermodel Cindy Crawford, the American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, Billy Murray, and John Krasinski. With close to 100 guests total looking on, Clooney and Alamuddin exchanged vows in front of hundreds of flickering candles, at sunset.

The couple had a special civil ceremony the Monday after their private wedding. The pair reached Venice’s city hall, the Ca’ Farsetti palazzo, via water taxi-one fitting of the occasion in fact, named “Amore,” or “Love.” Boat and pedestrian traffic alike was halted by Venetian authorities in the area for the ceremony. The two of them spent around ten minutes in the venue before they headed off by boat once again towards their hotel. People lined the canal, watching and wishing the lovers well.

It was revealed over Italian state television that later, Clooney and Alamuddin left Venice on a private jet, headed for London. Initial reports were that the human rights lawyer and Oscar-winning actor would be spending their first few days as a married couple in Seychelles, but it seems they opted for a staycation instead. According to The Sun, they are presently enjoying a secret honeymoon at a new place in London that Clooney bought as a wedding gift to Alamuddin.

The day after their wedding, the couple made their first public appearance as husband and wife, and it was obvious to anyone watching just how happy they were. “They are clearly on top of the world,” an eyewitness said. “They are just thrilled to be enjoying their wedding.”
