Gas Stations & Convenience Stores Galore

Last week, Rutter’s opened its doors and fuel pumps becoming the third such facility built or expanded in so many years. Next month, Frederick County will hear plans for a fourth such business along the same two mile stretch of Woodsboro Pike through Walkersville.

An applicant submitted plans to build a 7-Eleven convenience store and gas station directly across the street from Sheetz. That lot, which currently is home to a car wash, lies outside of Walkersville. As a result, Frederick County decides this development project.

“SP86-09 DISCOVERY CENTER 7-11 – SITE PLAN TYPE I
DESCRIPTION: DEMOLITION OF EXISTING CARWASH & CONSTRUCTION OF CONVENIENCE STORE & FUEL STATION”

The proposed 3010 square feet convenience store will be less than half the size of the Sheetz and the Rutter’s stores. The gas station will provide six gas station islands, which is similar to all of the other gas stations in Walkersville.

The opening of Rutter’s ushered in a bit of a price war for gasoline. All three gas stations briefly dropped their prices below $2.00 per gallon. Circle K has raised its prices to $2.10 per gallon. Sheetz and Rutter’s both continue to offer gasoline for $1.99 per gallon.

With a fourth gas station, the per capita ratio for gas stations will drop from one station per 1996 people to one per 1497 people.
