Four Goal Fanatic

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

Chidera Ogwulu

Scoring a goal in soccer is a feat. Imagine scoring not one, but four of them within 80 minutes. Senior Luke Gaffigan scored four goals in the recent game against the  Smithsburg Leopards.

Luke is a four year varsity player, which is an accomplishment in itself. Scoring four goals is just one of the highlights of his high school career. He’s captain of this year boys Varsity team, has made First Team All County his junior year and has been a starter in every game since his freshman year.

This week, Lion’s Pride caught up with Luke Gaffigan and got his thoughts on his achievement in the game.

C.O: “Was it your goal to score four times?”
L.G: “No. My goal was to beat Smithsburg but it was cool to tie the record”

C.O: “How do you feel about tying the school record?”

L.G: “ I feel good. I didn’t expect to score that many times”

Class of 2018 graduate, Spencer Shortt is the other current record holder. Luke and him are good friends and even better teammates. They both played for the same club team, FC Frederick.

L.G: “ I want to try and break the record before the season ends”

His goals are set high but after highschool his goals seem to be set higher. He’s interested in continuing his soccer career into college. So far his eyes have been set on Slippery Rock University, West Chester University, and Drexel University.

Lion’s Pride also caught up with with Luke’s younger brother, Eyob Gaffigan to see his thoughts on the accomplishment.

C.O: “How do you feel about your brother scoring four goals?”

E.G: “It’s an impressive achievement because he tied the record for the most goals scored in a game”

C.O: “Do you plan to try and beat that record?”

E.G: “I plan to try and beat it by my senior year”.

Eyob plans to fill the footsteps of his older brother. Luke has not only tied records but he has also set an example for the younger soccer players to follow.
