There are many forms of suffering among people in the world, and hunger is one of the greatest, but also one of the easiest to bring to an end. Joining the fight against hunger is an app called Feedie.

“Feedie is an app that uses social media postings to feed hungry children in Africa,” said art teacher Amy Graunke. “A user would download the app, then visit a participating restaurant, take a photo of their meal, and post it to social media through the app. And the restaurant would then donate a meal every time a user uploads a photo of their meal,” Graunke explained.

Graunke added, “this is like a win-win-win situation, because a starving child gets to eat, the app user gets to feel good and contribute, and the restaurant gets publicity.”

Unfortunately, according to wethefeedies.com, the closest participating restaurant is in D.C- meaning there isn’t a single participating restaurant in Frederick or Walkersville.

Senior Denae Hurt said “we need to bring attention to Feedie in Frederick because I know there are a lot of really supportive restaurants in this area as well as really supportive schools that would be interested in helping a great cause.”

According to thelunchboxfund.org, 60% of children in South Africa live in poverty, and 26% suffer from stunting due to malnourishment. Fortunately, Feedie has already shared 12,003,830 meals to children in need.

Another positive aspect of Feedie is it tells users exactly where the donations are going. According to thelunchboxfund.org, there are consistent programs providing nutrition in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West Province and Western Cape. The app even states how much has been donated to each area specifically.

Walkersville graduate and volunteer at the local Frederick Soup Kitchen James Shea said “being at the soup kitchen I’ve seen hunger first hand, and it’s really saddening to see people suffer like that, especially people you often form relationships with.” Shea added “to me, hunger is a really frustrating problem because it could easily be solved if everyone just started being more charitable.”

Though starvation is a global problem, apps like Feedie are helping make a difference. The more support generous apps and outlets like Feedie get from people, the bigger difference these outlets can make.
