Driver safety classes at senior centers

Mills Custom Wood Floors

The American Association of Retired Persons Frederick Chapter 636 is partnering with the Frederick County Senior Services Division and the Carroll County Bureau of Aging to co-host Smart Driver classroom training classes at local senior centers. The course is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed especially for drivers over 50. The course provides updates on Maryland-specific rules of the road and new traffic laws. Participants learn the effects of aging and medication on the driver, how other health-related issues affect driving ability, and ways to adjust to allow for these changes. Participants also learn when driving may no longer be safe.

The classes are scheduled for two hours in the morning, followed by an hour lunch break and then two hours in the afternoon. AARP-Maryland provides certified instructors to teach the classes. By taking this course, attendees may get a discount on their car insurance.
