County Executive Gardner Announces New Residential Solar Co-Operative Program

jangardnerFrederick County Executive Jan Gardner today announced the launch of a new solar co-operative program to help residents who want to reduce their carbon footprints and save money at the same time.

Homeowners in a solar co-op use their combined bulk buying power to save on the total cost of going solar. Residents purchase power at a lower rate, and enjoy financial incentives. The program also is open to small commercial buildings and other non-residential spaces, such as churches or community centers.

“This exciting solar program will bring homeowners together with a common goal to go green and save green through greater purchasing power,” said Executive Gardner. “I support this sustainability program as one more way to make sure that Frederick County continues to be a great place to live and work for future generations.”

Last week, Executive Gardner signed an agreement creating a solar co-operative purchase program called the Frederick County Solar Co-op. The program is a partnership between the county Office of Sustainability and Environmental Resources under its Green Homes Renewable Star Challenge, and Maryland Solar United Neighborhoods (MD-SUN), which is an affiliate of the Community Power Network.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments provided funding to MD-SUN to implement the program in Frederick County. The funds allow MD-SUN to market, coordinate and implement a Solar Co-op at no cost to Frederick County Government.

Information sessions will be held on Oct. 26 and Nov. 9, at locations and times to be announced.
