The boys lacrosse team lost a tough season opener 5-6 to Boonsboro on Tuesday, March 21st at Walkersville High.

Although no one wants to start the season with a loss, the Lions are looking forward to what is to come with many things to improve on and learn from after their game.

This season the boys lacrosse program has only one team as opposed to a varsity and junior varsity team; the team ranges from freshman who are playing their first season of high school lacrosse to very experienced seniors. It takes time to build chemistry as well as teach the younger players what the game is like at this level.

“We didn’t really connect how we know we can and made too many easy mistakes that cost us the game” said senior Jack Chavez. Chavez is a captain of the team this year with fellow seniors Joey Edwards, Brad Janis, and Jake Borowski. He was able to score one goal for the Lions while the other three captains helped keep Boonsboro from other scoring opportunities defensively and in the goal. Juniors Keegan Moriarty, Zach Hope, and John Kelly as well as sophomore Camden Church tallied one goal each.

The Lions created many chances, but will build on finishing them and minimizing mistakes. “We made some errors, but nothing we can’t fix,” stated senior captain Joey Edwards. He added, “As long as we keep working and figuring things out it’ll end up a great season.”

Sophomore Carter High also recognized the areas of improvement the Lions will work on. “I think that we will get in a rhythm that should be able to beat some of the higher level teams,” High said. Once the Lions find this rhythm they will be successful in their season and playoffs. High continued, “When it comes around in playoffs if we face the same team, we should be able to outplay them because tonight we didn’t play as a team.”

Chavez seconds this, “We know we are a better team and are going to show it when we meet them in playoffs.”

In the meantime, the Lions are “looking forward to Thursday against Linganore,” as Edwards exclaimed. Walkersville will face the Lancers at 6:00pm at home this Thursday, March 23.
