Three women dedicated to helping children who do not have enough to eat have established a new fund to support the Frederick Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB). Hermine Bernstein, BIAB founder, Melissa Sciolino Frank, and Barbara Dillon have created The Blessings in a Backpack Frederick Fund. The fund becomes one of more than 700 funds managed by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The fund will provide grants supporting the work of BIAB, whose mission is to raise awareness of childhood hunger and improve the lives of local children who depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition by providing food when school meals are not available. Currently, the all-volunteer organization packs weekend bags for 2,500 at-risk Frederick County Public School students across 17 schools each week, growing from 210 bags in one school since its inception in 2014.
