WHS Baseball Team Enjoys Their Last Home Game On Senior Night

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

On Monday, April 30th, the Walkersville High School varsity baseball team celebrated their senior players for their hard work throughout the season. The boys played their final home game against Catoctin High School.

The ceremony began with the underclassmen and coaches lining up along the third baseline while each player was announced numerically. Each player was announced, walked down the line with their family members and hugged/shook hands with each player, coach, Principal Tracey Kibler, and athletic director Mike Mummert.

“It’s surreal,” said senior Eric Turvin who will be attending Frostburg State University in the fall.

Senior Joey Thompson stated, “It’s nice to have a day to celebrate us. We’ve put in a lot of work and we all love each other. It’s great,” Thompson will be attending the University of Maryland.

“I’m really excited because it’s our last home game,” said senior Robbie Terry who will be attending Frederick Community College.

Senior Rowan Bennett expressed that he was, “excited but also said because it is my last home game.” Bennett is furthering his education at East Carolina University.

“I’m excited to [finish school] and go to the Bury,” said senior Aaron Jahnke who will be attending Salisbury University in the fall.

Senior Davis Kelley reflected, “It’s a little sad but it’s fun to play with my teammates during the last home game. It’s [also] exciting to move on and start a new chapter.” Kelley will be attending the University of Maryland alongside Thompson.

“I’m excited but also kind of sad. It’s going to be different not playing high school baseball,” said senior Jacob Wetzel. Wetzel will be attending Old Dominion.

“It [definitely] snuck up on me. I’ve been playing high school baseball for four years now and each season went by a little faster than the other. I hope we can get a few playoff games before it’s said and done,” said Christian Policelli. Policelli will be attending the United States Naval Academy.

Team deejay and senior Mikaela Miller was also recognized for her participation for the past four years as well.

“[This] is a melancholy experience. Some of these kids have known each other since they were four years old and this could be their last game. It’s going to be hard to see this group go,” said Coach Erick Greene.

Principal Tracey Kibler proudly stated, “I just did three senior nights [today] and it was for tennis, softball, and baseball and I’m honestly so emotional right now. I’ve seen every single one of them grow in so many different ways. I’m so proud of [Kathleen] Duffy and Olivia [Blizzard] for sticking with softball. This is a really emotional season for me because it is the last time I will shake their hands before it’s at graduation and they’re walking across the stage. The class of 2018 has performed incredibly both athletically and academically that they are leaving behind a legacy. This is the class that will be talked about for years to come for the things they have accomplished.”

The boys will continue their season in the playoffs after pulling off a 5-1 victory against Catoctin. Congratulations boys!
