The Walkersville Unified Track Team competed at the Maryland State Invitational on Wednesday. Athletes from Walkersville competed in their field and running events throughout the course of the day and earned their team a second place finish.

Walkersville competed against four other schools in their division, including Northwestern, Flowers, Suitland, and a fellow Frederick County school and a tough regular season competitor in Urbana. Expecting tough competition from a strong Urbana team, Walkersville was surprised by Suitland who finished first place overall.

Nearing the end of the meet it was clear that the competition would come down to the final races as Suitland and Walkersville were within a lone point of each other, and their relay teams battled in tough 4×400 and 4×100 events.

The 4×400 team of freshman Herbie Matthews, senior Uriah Hickman, junior Chase Tyerar, and senior Maddie Hommey dominated their heat under pressure, winning by a margin of nearly half a lap.

“We knew it was really close going into the relays and we were kind of nervous but we were confident in our relay team and knew if we ran our best, there was no way [Suitland] could beat us,” shared Hommey.

Walkersville’s additional 4×400 team of senior Emma Bernardoni, senior Giovanni Penate, sophomore Nathan Stambach, and junior Will Anderson, placed third in their heat.

Unfortunately, the point barrier was too much for the Walkersville team to overcome in the end and they fell just eight points shy of a first place finish.

While the loss was disappointing, Walkersville track athlete and senior Will Anderson noted, “Second place is still good.”

“We didn’t win gold but every student on this team already has a heart of gold in the way that they treat each other,” shared head coach Will Scheetz. “I’m so proud of this team.”

Walkersville was disappointed that they were not able to gain their third state title in as many years, but the team is already looking forward to getting better and taking the title next season.
