Water Rate Increase Public Hearing in Walkersville

The Burgess and Commissioners of the Town of Walkersville will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. to consider an increase of 20% on the base minimum bill and on each rate tier of the water rate schedule for customers. Walkersville Raises Water Rates

The Town of Walkersville Commissioners voted this evening to increase water rates across the board. Town Manager Gloria Long Rollins presented the board with ten different choices for increasing the rates. The proposals showed increased revenues ranging from $62,049.22 all the way to $105,242.18. Burgess Ralph Whitmore solicited input from a larger than average audience at Town Hall. No one rose to speak for or against the plans presented. Walkersville Budgets Increase and Decrease

The Town of Walkersville adopted its 2016 Budgets for Water and General Funds last night with little fan fare. All votes were unanimous and no members of the public spoke in opposition or support. After deciding to keep its tax rate “the lowest in Maryland,” Town Commissioners voted to adopt the General Fund budget present at its last meeting with one minor change. New Water Treatment Facility

The Town of Walkersville has been planning to replace its aging water treatment facility for some time. The Town’s water treatment plant is about forty years old. Last year, town leaders agreed to pursue plans for a system that utilizes reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis water treatment plants utilize a semi-permeable membrane to filter molecules or ions from water, and pressure to reverse the natural flow of solvents through the membrane.
