Lions Soar Through Week Four

WHS Lions Pride Original Story:

Last week, our football team went to North Hagerstown High, a forty-five minute drive from the school, to play the Hubs. At the start of the game, Isaiah Daniels caught the kick return. The first touchdown came from sophomore, #34, Josiah Jones early in the first quarter, as junior Ben Smith made the extra point. Junior, #3, Jake Hess had a return with a first down with 5 minutes of play left.

Next touchdown also came from Jones at the start of the second quarter, Smith with the extra point again. The Hubs quarterback #6, Jaynaz Melendez, was sacked for a loss of yardage by senior, #20, Alonso Hoes for a big play. Soon after, sophomore, #2, Mark Merica had a run to cap off the drive to add 6 to the scoreboard, with Smith’s kick blocked. The Lions quickly recovered the fumbled snap on the punt, which led Nick Edwards on the carry for a touchdown just two minutes before the half. The lions went for a two point conversion, senior, #7, Elias Barodi with the pitch to Jones who then threw the ball to senior, #42, Myles Roberts to score the connecting conversion.

As the game winded down Hess blocked a big pass from Melendez, then on the next play recovered the punt return to run to the Hubs 34 yard line. The Lions went on to win 28-0 on the road.

Junior, #23, Bryson Witcher fractured his hip flexor last week against TJ and will most likely be out for the season. The starting corner position is up for grabs, and Witchers actions will be missed on the field. “Being injured sucks but it’s nice to see my team work hard. North Hagerstown was really big but they were weak and very undisciplined. I’m proud of my dawgs.”

When junior Malcolm Holman was asked about the way the team plays together, “Can’t make excuses, we just gotta play” was his response.

With one of the biggest games of the season approaching, the boys need to continue to work hard. The next game will be Friday, September 28th, at 7pm, here on their home field at Walkersville.
