On Friday, The Walkersville Lions played against the Liberty Lions. This game was extremely anticipated because it was the first home game of the season. The excitement and thrill of the students, teachers, and players emphasized the tremendous amount of support that is intact throughout the small town of Walkersville.

The special events and traditions at WHS really excited the students for the upcoming Lion Fest at 7:00 PM. Senior Keren Ott said, “Although it is sad this is my last year being able to cheer on the boys, it will still be very fun to lead the student section. The tradition of the band playing at the end of the day really made everything feel real and I could not be more pumped!”

Senior Nathan Berry added, “I am also psyched to be in the front of the student section and to cheer very loud for my friends.” After taking home the 2016 State Championship, the boys are back and even more hungry to dominate their opponents and take home more victories.

“I have never been more ready. The crowd should be insane and we are all hoping for that win,” said senior Ty Littleton. As 7:00 PM approached, the stands filled up and everyone was ready for an exciting game. The game started with senior Jacob Wetzel’s 20 yard touchdown with 9:50 left in the first quarter. With senior Noah Sadler converting the extra point, the score was 7-0.

Within the next three minutes, senior Billy Gant completed a pass to senior Josh Polce for a 35 yard run. Lastly, with only 4:47 left in the first quarter, Wetzel scores a 14 yard touchdown, making the score 14-0. With only three minutes left in the first quarter, Littleton scored, emphasizing the lead going into the second quarter.

The second quarter was huge for the Walkersville Lions. Seniors Josh Polce, Jacob Wetzel, and Tyler Gleason scored. The score was 49-0 by halftime. This tremendous lead only increased as the game went on.

Freshman Josiah Jones scored the eighth touchdown of the night and his first touchdown in his high school career. By the end of the third quarter, the Walkersville Lions were leading 56-0. This score was maintained until the end of the game. That being said, the Walkersville Lions dominated the Liberty Lions with the final score of 56-0.

This win was extremely rewarding and exciting for all the players because of all their hard work and dedication on and off the field. Littleton said, “It felt really good to play on an unselfish team. We have been brothers ever since GVAA football. We started together and now we are ending it together. Since it is my last year, I am definitely trying to make the most out of it.” Gleason added, “It felt really good to win. It felt even better that we won by so much.”

Now the Walkersville Lions are officially 2-0. With the many games that lie ahead, the Lions wish for more victories so their hard work pays off.
