Mr. Griffin Walker Chapman, age 81, of New Midway, died Monday, June 19, 2017 at his daughter’s residence in Warrenton, VA. Born August 10, 1935 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Walker and Rebecca Mantz Chapman. He was the husband of Mary “Maddie” Davis Chapman who died in 2005.
Mr. Chapman was of the Methodist faith. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958 and later served in the Army Reserves for three years. He had been employed at Ceresville Motors for 11 years and then with National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed spending time with his family, flowers and animals.
Surviving are 5 daughters, Sallie Chapman Carta and Sheila Chapman, both of Warrenton; Barbie Sponaugle of Dayton, VA; Donna Rinker of Harpers Ferry, WV and Elizabeth Sheehan of Inwood, WV; a son, Mike Davis of Clinton, NC; a brother, Robert Chapman of Rockville, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, 3 nieces and 3 nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Janet Crocker and Sallie Curtis Chapman and a daughter, Judy Willis.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 23 at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, with Rev. Jerry Cline, pastor of Liberty-Central United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 noon Friday until time of service.
