Deputy Involved Shooting 3-21-17

On March 20, 2017 at 11:57 pm deputies from the Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 6100 block of Mississippi Lane for an open 911call. Deputies received further information while responding indicating that the caller’s son was acting very strangely and may be having a reaction to medication. A male could be heard yelling in the background.

Deputy Samantha Foland arrived at the residence at approximately 12:10 am on March 21, 2017, and met the callers at the door and entered the home. At 12:13 am, Deputy Foland made a radio call that there were shots fired and subsequently notified dispatch that a male was injured and requested Emergency Medical Services.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Deputy Foland entered the residence and was confronted by Alexander Astudillo (32 yr. old male) armed with a tactical knife. Deputy Foland drew her service weapon and ordered Mr. Astudillo to drop the knife. Mr. Astudillo refused to drop the knife and lunged at Deputy Foland who fired her service weapon once striking Mr. Astudillo in the hand and upper chest. The knife Mr. Astudillo had in his possession was located at the scene.

Additional Deputies arrived to assist and administered emergency first aide until EMS units arrived and continued care. Mr. Astudillo was transported by Maryland State Police Medivac to Shock Trauma in Baltimore where Mr. Astudillo is currently listed in stable condition.

.In accordance with a MOU executed in January of 2016, investigators with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office were called and are handling the criminal investigation into the incident. Investigators have secured a search and seizure warrant for the incident location and are currently conducting an ongoing investigation.

As is routine, Deputy Foland has been placed on Administrative Leave. Deputy Foland is a two year veteran of the agency.
