Bridgette Cooper Seeks Republican Nomination for U.S. House of Representatives Maryland Congressional District 8 Seat

Silver Spring, Maryland resident, Bridgette L. Cooper, is a candidate for U.S. Congress representing Maryland Congressional District 8. Ms. Cooper, an opera singer, mother, and a former music educator, now resides in Silver Spring.  Ms. Cooper is the first Bahamian American woman and opera singer to run for United States Congress for Congressional District 8 as a Republican and is a member of the historic Chevy Chase Women’s Republican Club and the first African American Sorority founded in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated.

Ms. Cooper’s impressive classical singing career, featured in Black Enterprise Magazine, ABC Here and Now and Scholar Magazine, has established her as a trailblazer.  She is the recipient of multiple awards of singing, producer and host of the tv program, Operaluscious “Where Opera Meets Lifestyle” and has performed with several opera companies, including The Washington National Opera, tours of Porgy and Bess, International, and the Broadway National Tour of Show Boat, American Theater of Harlem’s Raisin in the Sun and Picnic.  Bridgette Cooper is also an arts advocate and former award-winning DCPS music educator, where she received Outstanding Teacher of the Year for Ward 8. Even with her “new hat in the political arena,” Ms. Cooper is drawing constituents who recognize her commitment, her cross-over administrative and managerial expertise as a dynamic candidate able to efficiently represent District 8’s growing diverse population.

“Americans seem to be waiting for an invitation to get involved. We wait until awful things happen and then we speak. I realized early that others did the hard work for me (Abraham  Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Marian Anderson) so I need not wait for an invitation to become part of a greater solution for myself, for my family, or for my fellow Maryland neighbors and friends.” Bridgette Cooper is from a middle-class home.  Her mother is a former opera singer and retired teacher and her father, an attorney, whose family came to America from the Bahamas.  They helped settle the Coconut Grove area in Miami, Florida. “In his straight-forward Bahamian way of thinking, my father raised me to not look at race as a burden.  My mother raised me to understand the importance of knowing the history of people of color in America. I saw accomplished people of color everywhere I turned. I never thought for a moment that I could not do something because of the color of my skin.”

As Maryland District 8 Representative to Congress, Bridgette L. Cooper will focus on several national issues that also concern her community. Bridgette’s Five Pillars of Success for District 8 include:

  1. Family and Community – Making our families stronger through more comfortable access to community resources for opioid abuse, human trafficking, safer communities,  promoting physical health and mental health community organizations, that will help build stronger families, which in turn creates stronger and more reliable communities. Work towards stabilizing the inflated cost of living expenses for senior citizens on a fixed income.
  2. Excellence in Education – Closing the achievement gap once and for all in our District and across Maryland. More funding for established arts education,  and support for performing and visual arts venues that offer community education programs for the community. Supporting our educators and bringing innovative high-quality education programs such as charter and vocational schools, as well as school safety initiatives to  Montgomery, Carroll and Frederick Counties thus offsetting overcrowded classrooms and giving more kids opportunities to excel academically.
  3. Superior Health Care – Easy access to affordable and quality healthcare. Lessen the financial weight our seniors, often on a fixed income, are bearing for costly, sometimes overcharged medications. Quality programs that assist our senior and low-income citizen populations.
  4. Veteran Needs – Advocate for veteran and active duty personnel rights at local, state and national levels, including homeless veterans, veterans suffering from drug addiction and PTSD to include support for their families.
  5. Thriving  Businesses and Economy-Funding resources for agricultural-based businesses; access to finance opportunities for start-up businesses through community partnerships; support for local businesses that help to stimulate our economy, including supporting Governor Hogan’s Economic Development Legislation.

On February 27, 2018, Bridgette L. Cooper filed to run against incumbent Jamie Raskin in the 2018 United States Congressional race representing Maryland’s District 8. Cooper is the only female running in District 8 for United States Congress and is a former PTA President, and member of the historic Chevy Chase Women’s Republican Club, and is a member of the first African American sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Bridgette Cooper was awarded East Carolina University Distinguished Alumni of the Year, Outstanding Teacher of the Year, District of Columbia Public Schools New Teacher of the Year semi-finalist.
